If you are separated and have children, you may be entitled to receive or may be assessed to pay child support.
You can have the Child Support Agency assess payments. If you disagree with the terms of the assessment, you can ask the Agency to review that decision. After you complete the two-step review process, you may then ask a Court to make a decision if you still disagree.
Alternatively, you can come to an agreement about payments. If you are in receipt of an income tested pension or benefit, there may be some restrictions on the terms of your agreement, so you should seek advice.
If you have children over the age of 18 but still dependant, you may be able to seek further financial assistance after Child Support ceases.
Whether or not you have children, you may be having difficulty meeting your own expenses. If you have a reasonable need for some support, and your ex-partner has the capacity to pay for those expenses, you may be entitled to receive spouse maintenance.
