Urgency

If any of these situations apply, you should seek legal advice as a matter of urgency:

  • any property or other assets are about to be or have been sold or disposed of - it may be possible to prevent the sale of the property or assets, or prevent the seller from spending the money received from the sale;
  • you have very little or no money for financial support for you, or for children - if you are struggling to make ends meet, and if your ex-partner has the capacity to help you meet reasonable needs, you may be able to seek some urgent financial assistance from them;
  • you or the children are being or have been assaulted, intimidated or harassed - the law can protect you in various ways from further these actions, and you should report these serious actions to Police;
  • a child is about to be or has been wrongfully removed - swift action can be taken to make all attempts to return the child to you, including obtaining assistance from the Federal Police;
  • a child is at risk in any way - these matters should be reported to the Department of Community Services, and there are court orders that can be made to protect children urgently;
  • a partner is about to go overseas - if you fear that your partner may try to avoid settlement of family law matters by leaving the country, there may be ways to prevent them from leaving until all matters are resolved, or make other arrangements to have matters resolved in their absence.

In these situations you need urgent and practical advice from your lawyer.
